Our Rotorua Chiropractors
Rotorua Chiropractor : Dr. John Funnell
My classmates thought I was crazy going to the Chiropractor when I was at school! They couldn't understand how Chiropractic helped children. How wrong they were, and how lucky I was to have parents who knew about the benefits of Chiropractic care for kids. You see, I wasn't sick. I just felt better after seeing the Chiropractor.
Our family have always been fortunate to receive great Chiropractic care from some excellent Chiropractors. My older brother became a Chiropractor and he, along with some other Chiropractors I knew and respected encouraged me to look at Chiropractic as a career choice.
I travelled to South Carolina, USA to study at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic. Here, I studied under some world leaders in Chiropractic and learnt that everyone could benefit from receiving Chiropractic care - regardless of age, occupation or whether they were experiencing symptoms or not. Now that inspired me!!! I graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1986 and moved back to NZ to set up practice in Rotorua.
Since 1987, Funnell Family Chiropractic has helped many thousands of people gain better health and have better lives. We really do aim to provide lifetime wellness Chiropractic care to families. I see many families where 3 or 4 generations of the same family get regular Chiropractic care. These families have become some of the healthiest families in our practice. I love being a family Chiropractor and especially enjoy providing gentle Chiropractic care to babies as young as a day old! It helps them so much.
Family is important to me. Happily married to Margi, we have two wonderful children, Kiara and Jonah. Both children had their first Chiropractic check-up when only a few minutes old. Since then they've had regular check-ups to help them stay well and function at their potential. As a family we love spending quality time together and with friends. We love fishing, boating, the beach and roast dinners!!
Enough about us. Thanks for visiting our website. How can we help you with Chiropractic care? I invite you to try Chiropractic care and experience the difference a healthy spine and nervous system can make for your wellbeing.
I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how we may be of service to you. Call our friendly team today or email me with the link below.

My Mum canít believe how healthy I am now! As a child I was always sick. I remember being on medications all the time, and seemed to always be at the doctor. It was at a very young age that I had a goal to not be held back by my health and if possible to help others to be healthy.
When I started Chiropractic care at age 18 I was probably at my worst health, but I can now say that in my 40ís, thanks to Chiropractic I feel like I am getting healthier every day.
I gained my Chiropractic degree in Melbourne and graduated in 1990. It was five years of full time study and was very challenging.
After a couple of years in practice in Ballarat in an office that specialised in Chiropractic care for babies and children I headed off for my ďBig OEĒ where I ended up in Santa Barbara, California. Whilst here I concentrated on training in a specialist Chiropractic technique called ďNSAĒ (Network spinal analysis) which is a profound technique that uses mostly gentle contacts on the spine.
As a Chiropractor I really hope to help people (especially families) be living healthy, happy, relaxed lives. Chiropractic really delivers on this promise Ė it helps people be healthier and feel more relaxed and energised on a daily basis. I am just blown away at its effectiveness. I canít imagine my own life nor those of my family without regular Chiropractic care. The families that I get to see on a regular basis really inspire me as they tell me how much healthier they are and how much more energy they have Ė even children who do better at their schoolwork!
I am married to John (who I met whilst doing my ďbig OEĒ) and we have two children, Kiara (6) and Jonah (1). Nurturing them of course takes up a big part of my life currently, but you will often see me at the practice ďlocumingĒ for the others or helping out in other ways part-time.
I canít believe that it has been 20 years since I graduated as a Chiropractor. I cannot imagine my life without regular Chiropractic adjustments and wish this same joy for you.

I have been practicing chiropractic since 1999 and was part of the inaugural class to graduate from the New Zealand College of Chiropractic in Auckland. While still a student, I began training in the specialised approach called Network Spinal Analysis (NSA). Iíve practiced NSA almost exclusively since then and am certified to the highest level.
After arriving in Rotorua for a short locum in January 2000, my initial two week stint turned into 2 years! In 2002 I left Rotorua and spent a year travelling and practicing in the UK.
Various locums in New Zealand and Australia followed and then another locum back at Funnell Family Chiropractic, covering for Margi during her first pregnancy. In 2004 a chance conversation with a colleague in Singapore led to a new adventure in the tropics. The four years I spent there were thoroughly enjoyable and a great experience. Rotorua seems to keep pulling me back though, and when I was asked to cover for Margiís second pregnancy I jumped at the opportunity. Itís great being back with so many familiar faces.
Before studying Chiropractic, I completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Canterbury, majoring in psychology. The way NSA helps the brain interact with the body, increasing our ability to heal ourselves is fascinating. I have always wanted to work in the health arena but realised that true health comes from the inside out, not from suppressing or altering the bodyís natural mechanisms. Although itís great when patients notice positive changes in their body, itís even more exciting when people describe how their home and work lives are changing with Chiropractic care. I am very lucky to look after entire families and see them thrive (newborn babies through to great grandparents!)
In my younger days I swam competitively for New Zealand for many years. It was while I was overseas competing that I observed fellow athletes receiving adjustments and realised Chiropracticís unique performance enhancing aspects. Unfortunately I didnít discover this until very late in my career but it left such an impression that I started my studies at Chiropractic School soon after retiring from swimming. My experience as an elite athlete gives me an inside perspective when working with sportspeople of all ages and abilities.
Rotorua is a fantastic place to live with the Redwoods and so many beautiful lakes nearby. The people are genuine and down to earth and a real pleasure to work with. Outside the office I enjoy jogging, yoga, snow boarding, reading, good movies and spending time with my partner Ian and little dog Coco.

My sisterís teacher told her it was all in her head, but luckily our parents knew my sporty 8 year old sister slightly better than this. Every time Kylie ran she would get a pounding headache. For many years my father and grandparents had been regular patients at this very practice, and gentle Chiropractic care enabled my sister to run again without bringing on a pounding headache.
Regular wellness Chiropractic is where I personally saw the biggest difference. As a representative netball and volleyball player, I was either training or playing everyday of the week, sometimes twice a day. Chiropractic helped maximize my performance and aided in a speedy recovery. Not only this, as a regular sufferer of tonsillitis, sinus infections and hayfever, the frequency of these occurring dramatically decreased.
Whilst studying Law and Commerce at the University of Auckland I went to lyceum (an annual Chiropractic Conference) with the Funnellís and my sister in her first year of study at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic (NZCC). I was completely inspired and the very next day I enrolled to study at NZCC. For years my family and I had experienced the benefit of Chiropractic and I was excited at the possibility of helping people naturally improve their overall health and well-being.
After 5 intense years of study, I began my practicing career in Palmerston North, before moving closer to home and joining the fantastic team here at Funnell Family Chiropractic. You canít have a healthy body without a healthy spine, and I am lucky to see this on a daily basis. Everyday in practice reminds me that Chiropractic was, and continues to be, the perfect career choice for me.
I enjoy living in Rotorua with all that it has to offer, enjoy spending time outdoors, and I continue to play netball and exercise on a regular basis. Another benefit of living in Rotorua is its close proximity to my family farm just on the other side of the Mamakus. My family, including my grandparents now in their 80s, continue to receive Chiropractic care regularly, and see it as a vital part of their overall well-being.
Enough about me! How can we help you with todayís safe and natural Chiropractic care? You canít be your best if your spine is not working properly. Regardless of your age, young or old, you canít reach the level of health you deserve if your spine is not functioning at its best. As a Chiropractor, I have the privilege of being able to help people achieve the level of overall health and well-being they deserve everyday.
